July is National Hot Dog Month, and to celebrate we’ve pulled together a few unique topping ideas for this favorite picnic and ballpark staple. Because let’s be frank: ketchup, mustard, and relish can get a little bland after a while. When it comes to hot dogs — particularly grass-fed beef hot dogs — turns out there’s a lot of toppings that compliment the summery sausages. Here are five ideas to get you started:
Mix an equal part of buffalo sauce with mayonnaise, and drizzle over hot dogs along with crumbled blue cheese and thinly sliced green onions and celery. If you like, top the franks with the cheese first and broil for a couple of minutes to melt it.
Skip the corned beef and add sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian or Thousand Island dressing to your dog for a different take on the deli classic.
Bahn Mi Dog
The hot dog gets a Vietnamese twist with topped with sliced cucumbers and shredded carrots that have been tossed in rice wine vinegar, along with mayonnaise mixed with sriracha sauce and cilantro leaves. Swap the traditional bun for a fresh baguette with a crispy crust. For extra bite, add sliced pickled chilis as well.
Top your hot dog with your favorite nacho dressings such as chili or barbecued shredded pork, black beans, chopped tomatoes, shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, sour cream, and of course, guacamole. Crushed corn tortilla chips will also add some crunch.
Greek Salad Dog
Combine the classic ingredients of a Greek salad including chopped tomatoes, chopped cucumbers, onion slices, crumbled feta cheese, and halted Kalamata olives. Toss with a little olive oil and vinegar and top hot dogs.
When it comes to the beloved frankfurter, don’t be afraid to get creative — think outside of the box or in this case, the bun!
