How-To’s Top Tools For Cooking Steak On The Stove

A steak dinner makes the day special, no matter what day of the week it is. But sometimes landing with a tender, juicy steak on your plate can be a challenge.

Here are our top tips for the tools you’ll need to make amazing steak on the stove:

Cast Iron Pan

Although a regular pan will also take your steak from raw to cooked, a cast iron pan is the most essential tool for cooking steak. It disperses the heat throughout the pan – and the beef – and maintains a high heat for a great crust. It also makes for easy cleanup. When making steak on the stove, you can’t beat a cast iron pan. We recommend investing in a No. 10 Cast Iron Chef Skillet from Smithey.

Steak Knives

Believe it or not, the knives you use to cut your steak affect how tender the bite will be. Dull, low-quality can lead to tough bites of steak. There are many steak knives on the market — the key is choosing sharp knives that are easy to handle, such as this 6-Piece Premium Steak Knives Set from imarku. (Of course, tenderness isn’t only about the knives. When you’re eating some cuts of beef, such as flank steak, it’s also important to cut your steak against the grain.)

Meat Thermometer

Many people wing it or spend a lot of time guessing how long steak will take to reach their preferred doneness. But if you want steak with an even temperature, cooked just the way you like it, a meat thermometer is a must. Many of the less expensive thermometers don’t read temperature as accurately and quickly as the higher-end ones, so you’ll want to choose a high-quality thermometer that will last you a while. We recommend the Thermapen Mk4.

Tongs

Sometimes flipping steak is the hardest part of cooking it. If you’ve tried using a spatula, you know that means oil splattering all over your stovetop, and possibly all over you. Keep the splatter to a minimum by using tongs instead. We recommend DRAGONN Premium Tongs, which are sturdy, and easy to use, and clean.

Avocado Oil

When it comes to searing steak on high heat, the options for oil are not created equal. We recommend avocado oil because it has a high smoke point (520°) and a neutral taste. One of our favorites is Chosen Foods 100% Pure Avocado Oil.
